The older couple running the lodge were very kind. The wife gave us a lift to Gala while she was out running errands. Just be aware they don’t speak English. They prepared a nice traditional Japanese breakfast for us at 8am. The rate was very reasonable, around 6000¥ per person per night. It’s an old-fashioned Ryokan, with small tatami rooms and futons. The bathroom is shared, and there’s one sink for all the guests to brush their teeth at night. The walls are a little thin, so it’s best not to be too noisy. I’d recommend it for a budget trip to Gala and for a pleasant stay at a traditional Ryokan.

At 7150 yen for one person in a single room, with free-flowing hot spring water, this felt like a very reasonable deal, even in the off-season on a long weekend. It’s definitely a ski lodge from the Showa era. The building isn’t new, and you can hear through the thin walls between rooms. For a middle-aged guy sleeping alone, though, it’s perfectly adequate.

The bath was clean and not as cold as I expected, and the meals were very healthy. The the proprietress and the master are lovely. They treat guests very well when they follow the rules.

I finished both meals, which were homemade, really tasty, and brought back memories. The owners also left a great impression on me, especially the husband, who has a very interesting personality. I’d like to come back in winter!

It’s so comfortable here that I want to call it my home in Yuzawa! The uncle’s funny stories and the auntie’s heartfelt home cooking make me so happy ☺️ When work or life starts getting hard, come stay here. It’ll soothe your heart. I haven’t been back since COVID, but once winter season is over, I’d love to visit again and recharge.
