For a tasty start to the day, the Japanese breakfast was delicious. Naeba Springs Hotel has a small onsen and a very shabby drying room with lockers. It's a short walk to the Gondola, and there's a free shuttle too, though it feels fairly unnecessary. The price is reasonable compared with the Prince Hotel. Like the Prince, staying here can feel like stepping back in time. If you remember your grandmother's or great-grandmother's bedroom, you won't be surprised by the floral rooms. The bed wobbles, and the pillow and duvet are rock hard. Who knew a duvet could be hard?

I've stayed here two years in a row and would happily return. It's an old-fashioned, homely place, with tatami floors in the rooms and very kind staff. The lounge has an eerily beautiful look, very 70s.

The dinner was better than we expected. It's an older hotel a short walk from Naeba ski resort, and I think you get much better value here than at Prince Hotel, where the food is so-so.

The location is good and easy to find. Since you're mainly there to snowboard, the price isn't too bad, and the Japanese service is generally great. Overall, it works out well.

I was here for a Yoga Retreat. The staff were very helpful, and the vegetarian spread was extraordinary, though you need to book it in advance. It's an older hotel, so the rooms show their age, but they were clean and functional.
