There's a low-stress, family feeling here, and it seems good for families with children. Rooms cost 8-15 USD depending on whether you want air-conditioning. Lotus Diamond is a cheap, modern guest house east of the Siem Reap city centre, near the SR bus station and a small university. The surroundings are calm, with lots of other cheap hotels around. Since it's a couple of kilometers from the centre, you'll need to take a moto or similar along the busy highway to buy serious groceries. Recommended.
