The location still makes this a decent budget choice, with cafes, restaurants, convenience stores, subway stations and bus stops all nearby. I came back to Hostel Original Korea because it was where I stayed on my first trip to Seoul in 2017, and the return felt nostalgic, though this time I can't strongly recommend it unless location matters more than comfort and updated facilities. I had a single room with enough space for my medium-sized suitcase, plus a hard single bed whose springs made noise when I moved, a desk, small TV and hangers. The electronic door takes a key card rather than a code, and you can't leave it inside when you go out. I forgot mine a few times and staff had to let me in using a master code. The shared shower and toilet were manageable in size, but old and in need of renovation and better cleaning. There was also a washer and dryer for guests. Of the staff I met, only a foreign female employee was genuinely friendly. The male staff weren't welcoming. Late one night, when I asked for help getting into my room, a staff member opened the wrong room by mistake, then shut it without apologizing. It left me uneasy about how easily rooms could be accessed.

The reviews were mostly negative, but I tried the hostel because it was cheap and wondered if it could really be that bad. It was. When I arrived, nobody was there. I messaged on Kakaotalk, and they seemed unaware I was checking in, so whoever sends Agoda messages doesn't appear to coordinate with the staff. The room was filthy. The sheets didn't look washed, and there was mold in the CR. The tables, closet and chairs hadn't been wiped down. I used my own isoprophyl alcohol and bought wet towels to clean things enough to stay. I'm not especially fussy, but it was obvious no one had cleaned. The sheets had hair from previous guests, and the towels were stained. I asked for a cleaner and fresh sheets. They said someone would come, then said the cleaner would be late, so I took unused sheets from their closet and changed them myself. When I got back after a day out, the sheets I'd removed were still where I left them. They only apologized and did nothing to help. On my last day, they wouldn't help me get an uber or taxi because they didn't have an uber app. Dealing with them was infuriating. Believe the reviews, this hostel is disgusting!

We ended up with a nice little room, and I really liked the strong shower pressure. There was an odd smell near the toilet, though, and the Wi-Fi was unreliable. The area wasn't especially clean or tidy. Fine for one night.

We left before our reservation ended because we were worried about our health. In all my travels across Asia and 38 countries, this was the worst hotel of my life. The filth was so bad that I think the hygiene department should close it immediately. Our towel was dirty, possibly with excrement, and the sheets and pillowcases had mold and unidentified stains. Dust and dirt were visible everywhere. The window had exposed electrical wires and never seemed to close properly. The shared bathroom and toilet were horrifying, with extensive mold, no ventilation, hair and millards across the floor, and no sign of cleaning. The washing machine wasn't connected to water and didn't work. The staff smiled but were no help. In four days I never saw anyone clean, and nobody emptied our rubbish. One morning we woke to a very strong, awful sulfur smell being blown into the room through the air-conditioning. There are other clean hotels in Seoul at the same price. Avoid this one at all costs.

The first night, reception told me my room had been double booked, so I had to find somewhere else at the last minute. Nobody had warned me about the change. The room itself was extremely dirty: stained black mattress, filthy bedding, shower and carpet, marks on the walls, and a strange smell. After two days my skin felt itchy and uncomfortable, and I had to shower constantly. The shower was rusty and the water system was poor, too. I know it's a budget hotel, but it still has to meet basic sanitation and cleanliness standards. I strongly advise people to avoid this hostel unless they want to get sick. I reported you to clean.Korea. It's unacceptable to run a business this way.
