My room was nice, and the receptionist was pleasant, but didn't speak English. The hotel was hard to find: my taxi driver got lost several times, and it felt like it was in the middle of nowhere. When I arrived, four men were outside, but nobody helped with my bags or even said hello. I'm a woman traveling alone, and a staff member came into my room at 7 am and scared me badly. He didn't knock or apologize. I thought I'd locked the door, but he came in again at 9 am. I shouted at him to get out, and he looked very surprised. The train station is 8 km away, and a taxi cost 110k kip. The staff's attitude was unacceptable.

I stayed at Khounmixay Hotel for one night in mid-July 2022, after crossing the Friendship Bridge from Nong Khai. It's a new, clean, well-run hotel in northern Vientiane, conveniently near the new Lao-China train station. The taxi from immigration on the Lao side took about 25 minutes and cost 400 baht. The room was comfortable, with a wonderfully comfortable bed, quiet and efficient air-conditioning, a spotless bathroom and plenty of hot water. Some rooms face a neighboring restaurant that plays loud music, so I switched to the opposite side of the hotel to get away from it. The staff were very friendly and gracious, and clearly wanted guests to be comfortable. The restaurant food was tasty, especially the salmon goi. In the morning they brought scrambled eggs at the time I asked for. They drove me to the station, about 10 minutes away. Security for the train to Vang Viang and Luang Prabang is like airport security, and I had to leave my pocket knife behind. The staff kindly retrieved it and kept it for me to pick up when I returned to Vientiane. I'd definitely stay at Khounmixay Hotel again when I need to take the train.
