This place wasn’t right for us. It’s in the middle of busy Ahangama, above a shop on the main road, so there’s street noise as well as noise from the ocean. The rooms are tiny and basic, though nicely decorated, with narrow balconies and sea views. We were covered in insect bites, and the beds need mosquito nets. There were no shelves or enough storage in the room, so we lived out of our luggage. The bathroom had no hooks or shelves for toiletries either. We booked because we needed a kitchen, but it was tiny, short on basic utensils and unpleasant to use. We also needed to work a little, but there wasn’t really room for that, and the internet was patchy even on our phones. We were meant to stay a month, but told them on arrival that we didn’t like it. They insisted we pay for the whole stay; in the end we had to pay 75%. Most places in Sri Lanka are more flexible, especially when you don’t like the accommodation. We lasted a week. I’d suggest seeing the place before committing to a long stay. You can get to the sea through a narrow alley, past some living quarters and down fairly steep rocks. There’s a bit of beach at low tide, but at high tide the waves hit the rocks. If you’re coming to Ahangama to surf, it’s not a great base unless you have somewhere else to store your boards and get changed. Walking around town in surf or swimwear isn’t okay unless you want to offend the locals.
