The room was spacious, and the bed was large and comfortable, but many other parts of my stay disappointed me. When I brought things up directly, there didn’t seem to be much flexibility. There were several large cockroaches in the bathroom on the ground floor, even though the room itself was clean, and I had to deal with them myself. There wasn’t enough toilet paper, and when I needed more during the night I couldn’t find any staff. The next morning I’d already asked about checkout the day before and planned around the time, but got a reminder just 15 minutes beforehand. I find that stressful when I’m trying to leave rested. I checked out on time, then asked to use the pool briefly. They said no because a large group was staying. I found that very inflexible and disappointing. They did let me store my luggage after checkout, which I appreciated, but the service overall was poor and unaccommodating. I wouldn’t return.

We spent six fantastic nights with the team at Jasper House, and loved every minute. Kasun and his staff were so warm and attentive, and made us feel welcome throughout. Damith even ran a cooking class that we all absolutely loved. It was ideal for our yoga retreat, with everyone under one roof: a generous, well-equipped rooftop yoga shala, a cool, cosy restaurant below, and a pool of just the right size in between. The rooms are spacious and well appointed, with stunning views, and there are both open-air and air-conditioned options. I loved the outdoor showers as a way to feel connected to nature. The location is hard to beat, one minute on foot from Hiriketiya Beach, the afternoon turtle feeding, and my new favourite cafe and restaurant, Raa. I can’t wait to come back to Hiri and Jasper House in 2026!

Amelia is a talented yoga teacher who welcomes people at every level with such grace and kindness. The studio has a cool concrete interior and beautiful ocean views and sounds. Best yoga in Hiriketiya. I’d highly recommend booking a massage after class.

At US$140 a night, this was nowhere near worth the price. The place felt worn and poorly maintained, with old furniture, cheap finishes, rusty handles and a sticky floor. We didn’t get any room cleaning during our two nights, not even a basic refresh. The bathroom began to smell after a day, and with so little sound insulation we could hear a lot from outside. Breakfast was very basic and had little choice. The spot across the street had three times as many options. Food was left uncovered with bees around it, and staff made little effort to deal with them, leaving guests to handle it themselves. We know the simple, no-frills guesthouse style and have stayed in plenty around the world, but the lack of care was disappointing. The online photos and description had made the place seem much nicer. Plan ahead and stay elsewhere, there are better and cheaper options nearby.
