Ella Nature Nest

I have traveled extensively, but have never faced such blatant racism and physical intimidation at a property. At check-in, the host questioned my German phone number. I explained that I am an Indian citizen working in Germany, but she refused to honor our booking for one double room and one triple room. She said they could not provide the rooms because I did not have a German passport, an excuse that made no sense to me and seemed to mask discrimination. The host made derogatory remarks about my heritage, including stereotypes that Indians are "cheap" and "eating free food from temples." Then her husband brought a group of friends to harass my family. They made offensive gestures, including middle fingers, and physically threatened us until we canceled the booking in front of them. Even with elderly family members and heavy luggage, we were made to carry our bags down 50 steps and back up after being denied entry. This was a violation of human dignity, not just a bad stay. The property openly discriminates based on race and origin. As an international traveler of Indian descent, I did not feel safe or welcome here. Avoid at all costs.

The host was kind and made us delicious breakfast and tea. It's a peaceful spot among the trees, with squirrels and birds sharing the lovely view. Don't expect luxury: our room was very basic, and the walls are thin. When we left, we peeked into a neighbour's room that seemed a little bigger and cleaner and had a fridge, so perhaps it depends on which room you book, and asking early might help. The place is up a bit of a hill, so keep that in mind if walking is difficult and you don't want to rely on tuk-tuks. I imagine it'll grow and improve like many places in Sri Lanka. I'd absolutely keep it on your list if you want somewhere calm with a kind, friendly host.

The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, with excellent views of ella rock. It's about a 12-minute walk to ella city along the rail road. The host is super responsive and supportive.

The owner was really friendly and helpful, and breakfast was included. It's a quiet area with a nice view, and there are lots of animals in the nearby trees, which was fun. You can get into town easily by walking along the rail tracks.
