We came for one night and stayed three days, and would have stayed longer if we had more time. Our room was on the third floor facing the sea, where monkeys in the palm trees greeted us every morning. The greenery and huge windows throughout the hotel gave it a real jungle feel, and the small pool was great for a cool dip. The staff were very friendly. The train is close and honks as it passes, but that's part of Sri Lankan life and why we came. The famous turtle beach is a five-minute walk, past a little shop run by lovely ladies selling water, mangos, and king coco. Going through a restaurant and having a beer meant we didn't have to deal with an entrance fee. The beach itself was very crowded, with everyone wanting to feed the turtles, so we much preferred the beautiful, empty beaches to the right and left. Unawatuna is a 400 LkR tuk-tuk ride away. Loved it here!

The railway runs right alongside the hotel, with very little sound insulation, and trains start at 5 a.m. The location didn't have much to offer us. Compared with the five other places we stayed in Sri Lanka, this was very poor value for money. The rooms were just okay, cleanliness was average, and nobody cleaned them during our stay. It's a pity, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it.
We saw monkeys from our room balcony, and the staff even welcomed us with a traditional ceremony and a drink when we arrived. The people working there were lovely, and the views and pool were remarkable. Of all the hotels we stayed at, this was easily our favorite. It was clean and friendly, and I'd absolutely recommend it. It should be listed as five star. Can't recommend it enough!
The best part was seeing a monkey just outside our window, and being able to walk easily to the beach and see the turtles. The staff were very friendly, and management did try to help, though they forgot to tell the staff to clean our room. We asked for someone to sweep up the sand and take our trash after a few days of beach trips. They said someone would come, but when we got back close to 7 p.m., the room still hadn't been cleaned. There was no room service. The shower also stopped working as soon as I turned it on, so I had to wait half wet and tired for it to be fixed. The hotel is right by the train tracks, with loud trains passing throughout the day, and communication wasn't great. I had told them we'd arrive after 5 p.m., but nobody was at the front desk to greet or help us when we got there. There were also lots of mosquitoes inside the hotel.
Amazing views, a lovely hotel, and a great pool and bedroom. Tharanga was a very good host. I love this place and would recommend coming!
