Thalpe Bungalows

Murray, his family, and the staff were brilliant with advice and recommendations, and generally made sure we had a great stay. The three nicely decorated bungalows are arranged around a lovely pool, just a five-minute walk from the beach. There are thoughtful details too, like separate towels for the bathroom and pool. Really lovely accommodation.

The villa was spacious, clean, and nice, but our treatment by the hostess was awful. She was rude and disrespectful from the moment we walked in, and I felt she treated us that way because we weren’t white. She was then extremely sweet to a white couple who arrived after us. We tried not to let it ruin our holiday, left for another hotel, and came back only to sleep. The next day she said the foreign owners had told her to warn locals against speaking loudly, having parties or music, or bringing friends. Do they think Sri Lankans are hooligans or cave people? I’m sure the owners didn’t ask her to discriminate against us like that. She served us a terrible breakfast while still acting superior. We’ll never return. I hope the owners and hostess treat local guests with respect. We pay the same, and we’re human too, regardless of skin color.

Of the hotels we stayed at during two weeks in Sri Lanka in December and January 2021/22, across different prices, Thalpe bungalows was our favourite. The team was lovely and could offer tips or leave us to ourselves as needed. The place was very clean, we didn’t miss anything, and breakfast was tasty, with eggs cooked how you like them. The bungalows are comfortable, spacious, nicely decorated, and well equipped. Inside there’s a fridge and a little sitting area, plus a big bed with a mosquito net and a large bathroom. Outside, you can read in the shade with a fan or sunbathe by the pool. Wijaya beach is a nice, small beach about a 5-10 minute walk away, though it gets a bit crowded. Further along, Galle and Unawatuna have plenty of restaurants and evening entertainment. The bungalow team can help arrange transport. I’d recommend it for a few relaxing days on Sri Lanka’s south coast.

Dush’s curries were the best food we had on our travels, and dhal at breakfast has become a firm favourite. My wife and I had a wonderful week here. The rooms and gardens were immaculate, and the staff were fantastic. Thanks to everyone for making our stay so special. We hope to see you again soon. Martin and Claire.
