A lovely place in hikkaduwa if you want somewhere calm just outside the main area. There are some nice cafes and bars nearby, and the beach, with private beds, is a five-minute walk away.

We stayed one night at the Happy tuna hotel with my wife and daughter. It’s very close to hikkadua railway station and also near the beach. The room is basically one big, spacious space with lots of amenities, including a kitchen with gas and a stove. There’s an extra bed for kids too.

Honestly, we really didn’t like this place. Our first booking was a $9 room that was literally disgusting, nothing like the Booking pictures. It was by the kitchen with all the noise, and the bed was too small for two. They took advantage of our disappointment and offered another room for a higher price. That one was more or less okay, but still a bit dirty, especially the toilet. We decided to leave after just one night. When it came time to pay, they tried to charge us more, saying the dollar rate was 215 instead of 202, as Google showed. We’ve stayed in plenty of places, and this is one of the few that has earned a negative review. The owners simply didn’t seem to care whether we were there or not. Sad Tuna.

The room and toilet were large and quite clean, and the bed was comfortable, with a mosquito net. I also really appreciated being allowed to shower in a clean room after checkout, even though they’d have to clean it again. I was sweaty after being out all day. I had a great three-night stay. The location was good, and the rooftop terrace was nice. I didn’t try the food.
