The CatiPe Lodge

The hosts were kind throughout and really helped make our vacation better. On the first day I scalded my hands with boiling water, and the hostess quickly treated the burns with aloe leaves. Near the end we got sick, perhaps a cold or food poisoning, we still weren’t sure, and they helped us find medicine and checked how we were doing. The hostess also treated us to tasty dishes several times, which was lovely. We arrived at night and were shown to our room without any trouble. It wasn’t quite right for us, but they offered to move us for an extra fee, and we agreed without regret. Our room was wonderful: clean and spacious, with a high ceiling, large bathroom and bed, a private balcony and air conditioning. There’s also a shared kitchen outside that stays locked with a key. The house is a couple of minutes from the beach, with small grocery shops within walking distance. Larger supermarkets are 15-20 minutes away or reachable by tuk tuk. There’s an active railway next to the house, but it didn’t bother us. The area caters a lot to Russian tourists, and almost every cafe has a Russian menu. You can book excursions at many nearby places, and there are plenty of souvenir shops selling tea, spices, oils and other things. We’re grateful to The CatiPe Lodge for the hospitality.

The host family were so friendly and helpful that we felt like more than just guests. Our stay was too short, but it was one of the best we’ve had in Sri Lanka. The rooms were spotless, with comfortable beds, and the garden was neat and beautiful. There’s a well-equipped shared kitchen at the back. Catipe Lodge is in a perfect spot, just 50m inland from Galle road. Tourist shops, restaurants, the town centre, bus and railway stations, and the beach are all nearby. We’d definitely recommend staying here.

The owners were lovely and helpful, and the banana smoothie was yummy. For the price, the room was extremely clean and comfortable. The train tracks are right next door, so it can get very loud. I sleep deeply, though, and it didn’t bother me personally. It may not suit light sleepers, but it was all great for me.
