The place has a fantastic atmosphere, feels thoughtfully made, and the staff were so welcoming and ready to help. We spent two nights there. On arrival, they showed us around the garden and took us for a short walk that felt like a little safari. We even picked mushrooms, which they prepared for a delicious, generous dinner. We made music together in the evening, which was so much fun. The safari was amazing. We saw lots of animals, including a Black Bear and three leopards, with Hansa as a great guide. When we left, they arranged a good transfer and took us to their Temple, explaining what we saw there. The whole experience was incredible.

RISKY and SCAMS Please see the property before booking. The place wasn’t well lit at night, and being right next to Yala National Park means venomous snakes and vipers may be around and could get into the rooms. At other hotels near Yala, someone usually escorts guests to and from their rooms because of this risk. Basic hotel arrangements were missing. We had no towels or sheets for sleeping when we checked in and had to ask. At 10pm, the owner said the electricity was being cut to conserve generator power. The fan stopped, we couldn’t charge our phones, and they died during the safari the next day. We had to ask our driver to take pictures and send them to our WhatsApp. We’d booked two nights but canceled the second. The owner initially tried not to refund it; after I negotiated, he gave us only a partial refund. We found much better value elsewhere, and there are plenty of alternatives. PLEASE RESEARCH SAFARI JEEPS Check safari prices before booking with him. We paid $105 USD for a full-day safari, nearly double the prices we’d seen. Park entry TICKETS were not included, and only breakfast was covered. We paid for lunch ourselves. Breakfast was just two buns and one banana per person for three adults and one child. I trusted him because of the booking.com reviews, but I felt misled by the rating. He says he doesn’t like reviews below 9.5 on bookin.com. The jeep wasn’t his, despite his claim that it belonged to his son. In srilanka, people may call other people’s sons their sons too. The owner simply books through a third party and keeps the extra money.

BEWARE OF THE RISKS We stayed one night on 3rd Jan. I hate to be the first to give a 1* review, but people need this information to make an informed choice. There were no positives for us. We felt the property and its owners showed little regard for guest safety and comfort, and saw no clear precautions despite how close it is to the jungle. The biggest concern was the gaps in the windows and roof, which could let wildlife and reptiles into the hut. My mother-in-law was bitten by a Hump Nosed Viper in the washroom. She was admitted immediately to nearby Tissamaharama Base Hospital and fortunately is fine now. On another occasion, the door lock didn’t work, and the owner got into the hut through gaps in the window grill. The gaps seemed large enough for even a leopard to get in. I hope they’re fixed and the huts fully secured with grills and nets. Other concerns: the tin or metal roof made a lot of noise whenever dry twigs, leaves, reptiles, or insects fell on it. The fan was very slow and noisy, and the dim lighting inside and outside made it hard to spot insects, frogs, or reptiles. When it was dark or early morning, unlike at some other jungle properties, nobody accompanied guests between their room and the shared or dining area despite the snake risk. Booking communication was unclear. We requested three rooms but received one room with three so-called double beds, each barely four and a half feet wide. I’d suggest booking through an online aggregator instead of directly on WhatsApp. After our incident, I read that Sri Lanka has over 100,000 snake bites and hundreds of deaths annually. This may have been an isolated incident, but there’s no guarantee it won’t happen again. Prospective guests should check what safety measures are in place.

Yala Wild House was a welcome change from city life. As the name suggests, it’s a no-frills place in the middle of nature. The family running it were warm, kind, and helpful, and that’s what really stood out. They organized and led bush walks, sharing their considerable knowledge of local plants and animals. We also joined community drum sessions around the fire, and had some of the most delicious, authentic food of our trip. The stay exceeded our expectations, with Yala National Park’s entrance gates right nearby.

The host was so welcoming and kind that it felt like meeting a friend. We had a great wildlife experience in a place that gives you a raw, real sense of nature. If you’re going to explore Yala and want somewhere genuine and close to the outdoors, I’d definitely recommend it.
