D' Art Villa Retreat and Spa

I came to D’Art Villa after Sigiriya, planning to stay six nights before moving on to a three-day retreat elsewhere. Instead, they put together a retreat-style stay just for me, with daily spa treatments, yoga, walks on the beach, and all my food and drinks. It was just what I needed. They also lent me a bicycle, and I felt comfortable riding on the local roads. I was moved to a larger room too, which was a thoughtful touch. As a woman in middle age travelling alone for the first time in many years, feeling safe and cared for mattered a lot. Here I felt welcomed like family. The management and staff were warm, kind, and attentive, and their help never felt transactional. Suresh, the Assistant Manager, even went out to buy green tea for me and left it in my room. I used the laundry service, and my clothes came back the next day, neatly folded, sealed, and smelling lovely. Rooms can be cleaned daily if you want, and are comfortable, with excellent beds, Netflix, tea and coffee, toiletries, and snacks and drinks available on request. The shared spaces were spotlessly clean, and the pool was professionally cleaned during my stay. This is a quiet spa and retreat, rather than a busy social or party spot. Don’t expect the buzz of Ahangama or other lively coastal towns. It’s peaceful, with room to breathe, and worked well for me both as a relaxing place on its own and as a base for beaches, temples, and wildlife areas nearby. They can arrange tuk-tuks, suggest local beaches, cafes, and restaurants, and help with other needs. They organized a visit to Mulgirigala Raja Maha Viharaya for me. It wasn’t as breathtaking as Dambulla Cave Temple, but it was impressive, and the view from the top was unbelievable. They also arranged a safari to Yala National Park for other guests. My daughter was elsewhere in Sri Lanka and had been scratched by a cat, so she needed rabies injections. Even though she was staying in Ahangama, the team helped me figure out what to do. That was far beyond what I could have expected and meant a great deal. Meals are homemade and freshly cooked in front of you with excellent ingredients. The food was delicious and varied, with a different dinner menu each evening and choices of starters, mains, and desserts. They catered happily for vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs. Breakfast could be Sri Lankan or English/European style. The kitchen and dining areas were impeccably clean. Martin, the owner, was there while I stayed. He’s charming, friendly, gracious, and interested in how the retreat runs and how guests are doing, without intruding. I found him considerate and kind, and I’m very grateful for the care he showed me.
