Sleeping Elephant Beach Resort

The ocean is so close that its sound lulled us to sleep, then we woke to lovely sunrises. At the resort, we had what we needed: comfortable rooms, a roomy bathroom, a private pool, and a beach to ourselves. Each morning we could watch fishermen catch our lunch. The food and drinks were delicious, and the breakfast pancakes were my favorite. Tangalle is only a few minutes away by tuk tuk if you feel like a bit of city life. Or just make the most of your time at the Sleeping Elephant.

The hosts sorted out a lot for us, including an airport transfer, safari, trip to Ella, tuk-tuks for a surf safari, and even a great massage place. The prices were very reasonable, and Tangalle and nearby areas were easy to get to by tuk-tuk despite the peaceful, secluded feel. We spent a whole week in the private pool house and had an amazing time. It was clean, with a lovely garden and a really quiet atmosphere. Direct beach access, a very good breakfast with waffles and traditional choices, and an excellent dinner made it feel like everything was just right. We’ll definitely come back!

I couldn’t book a stay because they were full, but I went to see the place and the beach. The very nice Czech owners greeted me, welcomed me in, and showed me around. Sleeping Elephant has beautiful bungalows scattered through the garden, with a lovely stone path leading to the longest, most amazing beach I’ve ever seen. Wellodaya beach is wild, rough, and awesome. Swimming takes some courage, but you can take romantic walks for hours. You can walk either way along the beach and stop for a beer. There are lots of spots tucked into the trees, but you hardly notice them from the shore. The beach feels completely unspoilt. We didn’t stay here, but I’m giving Sleeping Elephant 5 stars for that fantastic beach and the wonderful family running the place. Thanks to them for the hospitality, they’re amazing! The restaurant was a highlight for me. The food was delicious, really tasty, and it had been a long time since I’d eaten food that good at a hotel. The property is in a quiet coastal spot, with cozy cottage accommodation on a beautiful long beach. Some cottages may have a kitchen and possibly a private pool, and there’s another pool at the resort. During our stay, the waves were big enough to make swimming difficult. Walk farther along and you’ll find a quiet beach too.
