Handunkanda Nature Escape

The phone signal was out, so it was easy to get a proper digital break. Starlink internet reaches most parts of the property, though not everywhere. We loved the natural pool, the tasty, authentic food, and the incredible view from this mountain-top setting. Our room and bed were comfortable, with places to sit around the property too. The people were lovely and the service was good. It felt like heaven up there.

The natural pool was one of my favorite spots, tucked into all that greenery and lovely for cooling off. I also really liked the sound of the place, distant water, frogs, and jungle sounds at night and in the morning, with such fresh air. The rooms are simple, but the mattress is comfortable, there’s hot water, and each has a private balcony. I came with friends, and the little animal enclosure was a big hit with my friend's child. There are also waterfalls, old ruins, and nature to explore nearby. I only wish we could have stayed longer. After a Vipassana course in Kandy, where the silence was broken by "For Elise" and city noise, arriving at Hadunkande felt like a blessing. It’s only about two hours from Colombo but feels like another world. The team made us feel welcome and looked after from the start. The food is simple, delicious, and authentic. Their papadam was the best I’ve had in SL.

The trip up the mountain takes some effort, but the peace and the unusual experience at Handunkanda Nature Escape made it worth it. The staff were so welcoming, they made us feel like family. We loved the waterfall-fed natural pool, which was wonderfully refreshing, and the food was delicious with a lovely taste of Sri Lanka. From the peak, the views are breathtaking. A special place for anyone who loves nature, wants an adventure, or just needs a beautiful break. Highly recommended.

I stayed a couple of days and really didn't want to leave. The walks and nature around the property are especially good, and the meals were great, with lots of Sri Lankan dishes to choose from. The team is professional but still friendly and welcoming, which gives the place a homely feel. I’ll definitely come back.
