The safari guide was young and seemed rushed to leave. He drove fast, sped past other vehicles without regard for their safety, and scared some animals away, so they were harder to see. He also flirted with me and made inappropriate comments about my body. I couldn’t leave a tip, and I wish I’d chosen a professional guide. I’m not sure this is safe for your daughters. The homestay itself felt chaotic and disorganized, and the sheets were dirty, the furniture old, and there were lots of bugs. It’s isolated, with nowhere to walk. If you need food or a ride to a restaurant, they try to charge you, and they take you somewhere they earn commission. The food there was bad too. Sri Lankan food is usually good, but not at this homestay. Udawalawe is rather remote, with not much going on besides safaris. The eco lodges may be more interesting, since they’re full service hotels at about the same price. I think a full service business is a better choice in this area.

We had a huge family room, and the place was clean and nice. The hosts were lovely and found us a good deal on a ride to Mirissa. Dinner there was amazing, and breakfast was great too, so make sure to eat at the property. Our safari guide was excellent, knowledgeable about birds, and had a sharp eye. He even spotted a little chameleon on a branch and pointed out some great animals. The only downside was that the hot water was just warm, though that was enough in the hot weather. The mosquito net was reassuring even though we didn’t see any mosquitoes inside. We’d definitely stay again.

The people are what made this family run Villa feel better than a five star hotel. They arranged our safari, took us to see the baby elephants feeding, and cooked us a fabulous dinner.

Our safari with Sheran was such a lovely day. He was kind and patient, and went along with us through an unforgettable experience. Thank you so much. 🇦🇷😍🐘

We stayed one night so we could visit Elephant Transit Home, and managed to do that as well as enjoy a nice safari. Sheran and his family gave us such warm, excellent service.
