The family running the house was warm, meticulous, and so helpful. As a solo traveler, I felt very well looked after. This was probably one of the cleanest hotels I stayed in during my long trip in Sri Lanka. The incense sticks, candles, and matches in the room were among the many thoughtful touches. They went the extra mile several times. For my early morning dive, they woke up early to make me breakfast at 6.30am. During a busy time, they also called several drivers to find me a car back to Colombo for much less than most people were asking. The house is a few minutes’ walk from the beach and popular restaurants. There’s a small family-run convenience store right outside, a fruit vendor, and an ATM about 100m away. Friendly tuks wait outside if you need a ride farther out, for example to Galle Fort for a day trip, or to Jungle Beach and the Japanese Peace Pagoda. It’s quite a walk to and from the main road, but as a tourist I found the location more convenient and didn’t want for anything. The house is surrounded by trees, so I expected a few insects or mosquitoes in my room, but surprisingly I didn’t encounter any.

Only four rooms, so book ahead. The house is quiet and close to everywhere, with breakfast included, and you can order lunch or dinner too. Piyal, the owner, is a great cook. His fish was the best I tried on Lanka. It’s an authentic colonial-style house run by a lovely Buddhist family. There are carved wood details and old pieces of art throughout, plus a garden. I could climb down a huge mango tree from my balcony.

We loved staying with Piyal and his family, and extended our visit as soon as we arrived. The house is stunning and unlike any other place we stayed. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, and we loved the location, the hospitality, and our room’s private balcony overlooking the garden. Waking up there felt like being in another world. We wished we could have stayed longer. All the best to The Dream House. I hope you decide to stay there and enjoy it as much as we did.
