Bay Beach Hotel

I spent five days surfing with Samaru's school in Weligama, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. Aruna was an encouraging teacher, and I was standing on the board in my first lesson. A few days later, I was trying out the line-up with another of his great instructors. The teachers are kind and work with every level, so you can learn at your own pace and feel safe. There's no pressure. Aruna, the owner, really knows the waves and is one of the most attentive, kind people I've met. He made it easy to connect and feel comfortable both in and out of the water, and went above and beyond for his guests. A heartfelt thank you to him. The school is right on a lovely stretch of beach, with secure lockers for valuables and backpacks, handy showers, and comfortable loungers to relax on after a session and take in the view or sunset. The beach restaurant was a big plus, too. I had a delicious salad. They also arrange activities beyond surfing. I went snorkeling in Polhena with a kind guide, at a very fair price, and we saw turtles and lots of fish. If you're after a surf school that feels like family and is organized but relaxed, go to Samaru and ask for Aruna. I'll definitely be back!

The room was spacious, and the beach location is hard to beat, with free sunbeds. Staff were friendly, and breakfast was included. It was fine, nothing special, with eggs, bread, fruit or juice, and coffee or tea. There's a surf school on site, where lessons cost 4000 rupee. The rooms look very old-fashioned, and the property could really use renovation. There was a strong smell of smoke in my room even though smoking there is prohibited. I guess that's because guests don't follow the rules, but it was unpleasant. I took a private surf lesson for 4000 rupee that lasted 1-1.5h. The instructor was friendly and helpful, and I'd recommend the lesson.

With the beach just outside the room, it's lovely to get up in the morning, take a walk, order a coffee, and watch people surf. It's a great place to stay on a good budget, with plenty of nearby restaurants and pubs to explore. The Sri Lankan breakfast is delicious and worth trying beyond breakfast, too: string hoppers with fish sambal, tuna, and curry.

Arun was amazing during our surf lesson. He took the time to warm up with us, explain the basics on land, then coach us in the water so we could improve as much as possible. Afterwards, he took us snorkeling with turtles in Mirissa. Thanks to the world's best Arun and Samaru for the great service and wonderful memories.
