MaMa Boutique Hotel & Restaurant

The excellent breakfast and the location near the beach and restaurants were real pluses. I wanted to love this quirky place, but the stay was a letdown. The room was tiny, and the glass toilet door meant you could see each other on the loo. The pillow was the worst I’ve ever had. We asked for two more at about 6:30 and were told they’d be ready when we got back. By 9:15, the whole place was dark and locked up, though we could get in through the side door with a keycard. There were no pillows. A girl who seemed barely out of her teens was running things. She was sweet, but seemed out of her depth. The safe and TV didn’t work when we arrived, and later we found at least two dead sockets. The room was incredibly noisy: trains, road traffic, people moving things in the room above us until 2 a.m., and music playing into the early hours. After such a bad night, we moved to another hotel for our second night in Jurmala. Asking for a refund didn’t seem worthwhile when the girl couldn’t sort out the safe or pillows. Dreadful.

This family-run place has a cute, hippie-style feel, like it’s still coming of age, and sits in a handy spot opposite the museum. The train station and attractions such as the 'Inner Light' Art Studio are close by. It’s right beside a busy road and the railway tracks, so it can get a little noisy.

The price is too high for what you get. Although the listing shows AC, it didn’t work, making a hot summer night really unpleasant. There was also a lot of noise outside from the nearby train station and main road.

Charming staff and a good location made this a lovely, characterful hotel.
