It's about 15-20 minutes by taxi from the city center. I didn't try public transport in Riga. I prefer walking, and it took me around 50 minutes to an hour at a slow pace, but I enjoyed it as sightseeing. I stayed at Rija VEF Hotel for a few nights. It's definitely a budget hotel, so keep that in mind. My room had just one pillow, a narrow bed and no kettle. If you want hot water, you have to ask at reception, which I found inconvenient compared with hotels in Asia and the Middle East, where kettles are usually standard. There are two lifts, but only one was working during my stay, so getting up or down could take a while when lots of guests were using it. The receptionist seemed a bit unfriendly at check-in, but the other staff I met were pleasant and helpful, which made up for that first impression. Breakfast was good, though the selection was the same each day. I looked forward to the apple puff pastry every morning, though I'm not sure what it's called exactly. It's a practical, affordable choice if basic amenities are fine with you.

It's a nice, basic place, though the rooms could use a refresh since the wear is very visible. The huge potholes at the parking lot entrance should be filled in or at least marked so guests can avoid them.

We found two good things: it's easy to get to the city center by bus or tram, and the nearby shopping mall has a supermarket open until 10pm. Breakfast was okay, but dinner from the outside caterers was a cold catastrophe, so we ate out the second night. Rooms at the front face a very busy main road all day and night. We soon understood why they provide ear plugs.

Our stay at Rija VEF Hotel was decent, though we didn't really get to enjoy it because everything felt rushed and too short. Our tour provider from the UAE booked us there. We arrived around 5 PM on September 18, 2025, and left at 4 AM on September 20 for our next flight. The room was clean and breakfast was fine. They kept refilling the food, though we hoped for more variety. Getting there takes a while: about 20 minutes by taxi from the Central Bus Station because of a long U-turn, and roughly the same by tram from the Old Town, around nine stops. Noise was the main issue. We could hear neighbors coughing and people walking in the hallways. If you're a light sleeper, you may wake up in the middle of the night.

A white stain on my bed, and when I asked, the service refused to clean it and gave me “milk”. This place is terrible! The neighbors were SOOOO LOUD too. I could hear clapping ALLLLLL night, plus people saying things like “Yess daddy”. Bro, let me sleep in peace and save the cheerleading practice for daytime.
