The bedroom wall was covered in mold, top to bottom, and there was lots of mold in the bathroom too. The whole place smelled awful, and after a few hours I was coughing and sneezing. The floor was just broken tiles. When we asked about AC, they said it wasn't possible and offered a fan for an extra 6 Euros. We were told breakfast was included, but couldn't find anyone the next morning. At 11 a.m. we left. We had another night booked, but it wasn't worth staying, so we booked somewhere else. The booking agency refunded us, and hopefully they'll remove this place from their listing. I'm not a picky traveler. I've been to half the countries in Africa, often hitchhiking and staying in basic places, but this was a health hazard. I've stayed in hotels with dirt floors that were cleaner. You'd be better off in an abandoned building. Avoid at all costs.

Abderahim was really nice and helpful, and the location is the other good thing about Dar el Mask. It's in the middle of the medina maze, which is a great spot but really hard to find. Our ground-floor double room had no windows, was very humid and stinky, and we slept badly. The AC was extra, as stated in the reservation, but the humidity was still high. On the second day, Abderahim offered us a room on the third floor with a window and less humidity, so we decided to stay one more night. The second night was even worse: we were literally eaten by bedbugs and had to wash all our things to avoid carrying the insects with us. It's a cheap place, but for us it was a nightmare. The room and services need a lot of improvement.

Finding the place was difficult, and the room had a strong cat urine smell. There was also a large burn hole in the blanket. When we left, the manager asked for more than the price we had agreed on.

The room and bathroom were both dirty, the beds were filthy, and the whole hotel smelled bad. It was so loud at night, with the owners and their friends laughing and shouting until the early morning, that sleeping was difficult. Breakfast was just a loaf of bread and a little jam, which we passed on. The owners don't speak English, either. Getting there was a struggle. The narrow streets can't be reached by car, and the Google Maps address was wrong. After several calls, a small child helped us find the hotel, about 1 km beyond the location marked on Google Maps as Hotel Gharlia. The child then asked us for money. There are cleaner, nicer parts of Fez and hotels there, even if they cost a little more. I really wouldn't recommend this place.

The staff did their best to help, and I'm grateful for their kindness. The rest of the experience was upsetting: I had booked Palais Walid but was moved to a place with a different name and address, without anyone explaining what was happening. The owner showed no consideration for guests, which left me feeling even colder than the January weather. The bathtub had no stopper, and the shower had no hot water.
