Dar Labchara

Mohammed turned a frightening, exhausting start in Fez into one of the most meaningful memories of our trip. We’d been scammed at another riad booked through Booking.com, Riad Amir on Derb Serraj street, and were lost and scared in the Medina. We worried Mohammed might also be after money, but he calmly explained that he worked at a nearby riad and wanted to help. He brought us to Dar Labchara to sit, catch our breath, contact Booking.com, and work out what to do. Tea and snacks helped, but most of all he made us feel safe again. We’d even considered leaving Fez the next day instead of staying the planned three days. His kindness changed that and helped us trust that there are good, sincere people in the city. He advised us on places to visit, food, and what to watch out for in the Medina. He walked with us to the food market, money exchange, argan oil shop, and hammam so we’d feel comfortable and protected. We got local prices and felt looked after like family. Mohammed became an unexpected father figure and our guardian angel amid the Medina’s chaos. The room was spacious and had what we needed. The smell mentioned in other reviews is real, but it didn’t bother us much. The stairs are narrow, so taking a big suitcase up to the second floor can be a little difficult. The house is beautifully decorated and full of character. Breakfast was very generous, even better than the one we had in Marrakech. Dar Lachabra is conveniently inside the Medina, about a 10-minute walk from the Blue Gate and within easy walking distance of the Al Quaraouiyine University/Mosque area and the tanneries. It worked well as a base for exploring Fez on foot. We hadn’t had much luck on arrival, and before finding Dar Lachabra that other riad experience had left us tired, confused, and honestly quite scared. Fez felt overwhelming, and our first impression of the city was poor. To anyone thinking of booking Dar Labchara, please don’t hesitate. For us, it was a safe place when we needed one, a hidden gem in the heart of the Fez Medina, and more than just a riad. Mohammed, if you read this, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You turned one of our worst travel experiences into a memory we’ll always value. Because of you, Fez is a place we’ll remember fondly, not one we want to forget.
