Riad el Farah Kasbah

I’ve stayed in many riads in Marrakech and elsewhere in Morocco, and this was by far my most disappointing experience. The room was cold, and although it had a heating and air conditioning unit, there was no remote. When I asked for an extra pillow, I was given one without a cover. Breakfast was extremely basic: a piece of toasted flatbread and a small pancake each, plus coffee I honestly couldn’t drink. The owner seemed interested only in money and showed little understanding of hospitality. On arrival, he tried to charge us an inflated tourist tax. We looked up the correct amount, and he lowered it immediately, but not before becoming threatening and rude. He also asked us not to discuss it with other guests. Wi-Fi cost €2.00 per person per day, was intermittent at best, and I’ve never had to pay extra for it at another riad. The stay was uncomfortable, and I wouldn’t recommend this “riad” to anyone. It looks nothing like the photos, which were obviously taken years ago. The place needs serious investment and a manager who can provide even a basic level of customer service. There are hundreds of riads in Marrakech, so choose somewhere else.

The proprietor was willing to help, and getting to know him could help you have a safe and interesting holiday. Just keep in mind he’s a Moroccan businessman who wants to make money, and you have a choice as a tourist. For what we paid, the Riad was fair. The room was cleaned daily with fresh towels, and the place was generally tidy, clean, and authentic. The sunny roof terrace was lovely. It’s very close to the centre, though tucked down a dead-end alley in the Kasbah’s maze of lanes. After the first eye-opening walk, you’ll soon get the hang of finding your way around Morocco. This isn’t a European 4/5star all-inclusive hotel package. Morocco is different, so embrace it and enjoy the experience.

We went on two great excursions with the owner, MOHAMED. He was informative and helpful throughout both trips. The evening meals were very good, too. The RIAD was clean, comfortable, and traditionally MOROCCAN. I really enjoyed our stay and would be more than happy to visit again.

Right in the Kasbah, this place is fantastic value for money. Mohamed is an amazing host, so relax and take his guidance. If he suggests somewhere, go for it. For the real Marrakech, forget the 4* spa. You won’t regret staying here.
