Hôtel Saghro

We spent our first night here at the start of a three-day Sahara desert trip. The room was nice, but dinner came very slowly, and the portion was too small: just two dishes for eight people.

What stood out most was how they handled my wife’s celiac disease. After some confusion, when they thought she was vegetarian, they eventually prepared a separate gluten-free meal of steamed vegetables and three meatballs. She had no reaction, and we were grateful for that in such a remote location. We stayed one night during a desert trip and hadn’t expected much since it was included in the tour. The room was fine, nothing special, but the bathroom had mold and wasn’t cleaned well. Loud music from the bar or club carried into many rooms until 11:30 pm. Dinner was decent and served family style, so how much you could eat depended on your table.

The view is a 10/10, and the pool is lovely. After a day in the sun, it was exactly what I wanted. The rooms could use an upgrade, but they were very clean and the AC worked really well. Dinner was great, while breakfast could have had more variety and more options. Hospitality from the staff could be better. We had to write down our order ourselves and walk to the bar three times, first to ask for drinks, then to hand over our order, and again to help bring our own drinks and open them.

We only stayed one night as part of our desert tour to Merzouga / Erg Chebbi, and loved it enough to talk about coming back for a longer stay at Hotel Saghro. For what we paid, we were blown away by how much the hotel offered. It’s massive, with plenty to enjoy, and the staff were kind and eager to help. Our room had more than enough space for two, and the balcony view was beautiful. The pool was lovely, with ample patio seating. We’re used to paying far more in the US for places that are run down, dirty, unsafe, and have no staff on site, so the negative reviews left us confused.
