KAUNG Hostel

We booked an 8 bed room but were shown a nice 4 bed room when we arrived. The bed itself was comfortable, but the room was tiny, with beds like prison cells. There were toenail clippings along the bed, odd stains on the bed frame, dirt smudges on the walls, and dust everywhere else. The bathrooms weren't in good condition either. We booked three nights and could only stay one. When I told the girls at reception and asked for a refund, they said the cleaner hadn't been available the day before and that we'd been upgraded to a smaller room. There was no apology. Disgusting place, avoid at all costs!

The soundproofing was horrible, like there was no wall between rooms. I could hear almost every sound from next door. Still, it was basically comfortable. I stayed six days, and the hostel had an okay location near Mandalay palace and the train station, okay breakfast, hot water, helpful staff, and was clean enough. Sometimes the toilet hadn't been flushed, so if you were unlucky you'd see some dirty stuff in there, haha. There's a laundry shop just across the street that charges 1000 kyat, and an amazing Korean restaurant nearby, about a 15-minute walk away.

It's a lovely place in a very good location, with clean, comfortable, quiet rooms and helpful staff. Breakfast is simple but good. You can rent a bike, and borrow things like towels and a powerbank. The bathroom has a hairdryer, and there's a common area and a mini library too.

The price was reasonable, and the location was great. The rooms had enough space for belongings, and the beds gave you decent privacy. But the place felt stuffy, and it would’ve been nice to have windows open for fresh air. Cleanliness was a real problem: the bathrooms went three days without being cleaned, ants were in the rooms and beds, and the breakfast area was left dirty, with overflowing trash and used dishes.
