Mingalar Mandalay Hotel

The staff are the best part: attentive, friendly, and clearly doing their best. Still, the hotel feels worn already, with cheap materials, poor upkeep, and visible damage on the doors and other details. This is more than a hotel, it's a gated complex with residences, shops, and the hotel at its center. The grounds are large but feel empty. Many homes are unoccupied and lots of the commercial spaces aren't open, so it comes across like a display for potential investors. The guests seem to be local middle or upper-middle class, rather than the clientele I'd expect at a high-end hotel. The bright reds, fuchsia, burgundy, and yellow are visually overwhelming and feel more kitschy than refined. Rooms are small, plain, and not especially comfortable. I'd put the standard at about three stars, perhaps three-plus by Asian standards compared with Malaysia or Thailand, and well short of five stars. Paying more than $100 seems hard to justify; around $60 would feel fairer. The grounds were also quiet and sparse during the water festival party when we arrived. There were about 10-12 people, a basic DJ, and simple music, which didn't feel like a four- or five-star event. Breakfast looks impressive at first, with even an ice cream freezer, but it's mostly local food. I had few choices beyond things like omelette, beans, and fruit. The price and what you get don't really match. And don't believe the bloggers who get free nights here so they can describe how great it is 😁🫢
