We spent two nights there in late September, and it wasn't a particularly pleasant stay. The room was spacious and clean, though a little musty because it got no natural light. The air conditioning helped, the beds were comfortable, breakfast was included and simple but fine, and most staff were polite. Ground floor rooms are reasonably priced, but noisy early in the morning. A couple of senior staff were very rude. I grew up in Asia, but this was too much even by Asian standards. When we said we didn't know how to ride a manual motorbike and asked for an automatic, one staff member tossed our money back on the table and said, "take your money back." He pointed us vaguely toward another shop, but it had no automatics. After an hour asking around on the street, we found out Breeze hostel was the only place in town renting motorbikes to foreigners, which locals all seemed to know. The managers were very nice before check-in. After we'd checked in, I tried to ask about the price because the manager had just lowered it for another couple in front of me. A new customer arrived while we were talking, and the manager simply got up and walked away without a word. He spoke really good English, so even a quick "excuse me for a second" would have helped. I've never been treated this way while traveling around SE Asia. I hope they treat other travelers better.

The place is in a very good spot, within walking distance of important sights and close to the pier. Rooms are simple and nice, and the toilets are clean enough. It's cheap, so don't expect room service. Traditional Burmese breakfast is served every other day. You can rent an inexpensive scooter here, and the staff can help with transport.

The hotel itself is nothing special: the breakfast is small, check-in took painfully long, and the rooms are ordinary. It is by the river, with a few places to eat nearby. I was surprised and disappointed to find it was the city's central hub for European backpackers, including the sort who haven't showered since leaving home and put their dirty feet on tables and furniture while checking their phones for motorbike rentals to visit the few nearby sights. That crowd is enough to keep me from coming back.

Breeze Guest House is a cozy, affordable option in Mawlamyine, in a quiet neighborhood a short walk from the city center and the famous Kyaikthanlan Pagoda. The colonial-era building has charm, and the rooms are clean and comfortable for the price. Staff are friendly and helpful with suggestions for things to see and do, and they can arrange laundry or transport. Highly recommended.

The staff are very helpful, at least some of them, and they offer the best value tours in town. The balcony has an amazing sunset view. Rooms are cheap and right on the riverfront, though cleanliness is only average, so tidy people might not be happy. Breakfast is small.
