BaobaBed Hostel Bagan@ Bagan May

The stay in Bagan was epic, with a great location, free bikes, and e-bikes for rent across the street. The rooftop pool and bar were amazing, though sadly the pool closes at 9pm. Our double room was nice, but the shower didn’t get very warm. There was construction next door when I visited in 11/2018. They have a room for early check-in and a welcoming lounge and reception.

We were a group of five staying for the soft opening in June 2018, after Baobabed had completely renovated the hotel. Kai's team looked after us so well, and they’re genuinely kind. The place was already really comfortable, with well-designed dorms for backpackers, space to put your things beside the mattress, and spotless rooms and bathrooms. There’s a big downstairs space to hang out with other travelers, and the hotel is only a few minutes by bicycle from old Bagan’s temples. Happy times, and the coffee is great too! They said a third floor and rooftop pool were planned, which would make an already comfortable place even better.

We ended up staying in a private room for our last night after extending, and it was clean, with a very hot, powerful shower. Those rooms are in high demand, so book ahead if you want one. The dorm and bunk beds were clean and comfortable, with lots of space, and the separate shower and toilet areas were a real plus. You can check in at 9 am, leave your bags, and nap in a separate area. The rooftop pool and bar were a highlight, with buffet breakfast served up there. You need to shower before swimming, and that shower is cold, but it’s hot most of the year so it wasn’t a big deal. The rooftop closes at 10 p.m., though you can take drinks down to the lobby and keep going. The reception is open and spacious, with a pool and foosball table, coffee tables, bench seats, and a small cafe for food and drinks. There’s also free self-serve coffee and tea and a water dispenser on the first floor. Staff arranged a half-day bicycle tour, and the hostel also ran free organized events. We took the free sunset and sunrise trip, which is a must-do, and rented an e-bike across the street for 3000mmk. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and this place offers great value for its amenities and service. I’d book again.

The location is handy for the temple and restaurants, and the pool was clean. The room was clean too, but the bathroom water was poor and needs stronger pressure. Breakfast was just average.
