Hood Hostel

The people working at Hood Hostel were nice and helpful, but management and maintenance were disappointing for a hostel costing over $12 per night. There was no working Wi-Fi when I arrived. It took two days to get it fixed, and even then the connection was very slow. None of the bathroom locks worked, and although I reported it, they stayed broken for my whole visit. The room key card didn’t work either. I got a physical key later, but after a day they took it back and told us to leave the room unlocked all the time. That felt very disappointing and unsafe. Worst of all, I got an electric shock from the water heater and shower system while showering. It could have caused a serious accident. The staff were kind, but the hostel’s management and facilities were really bad.

It’s a quiet spot in downtown Yangon, even though the nearby streets are full of restaurants, eateries, and shops. Several monuments and the airport bus stop are within walking distance. The staff are brilliant, super friendly, and happy to help with things like SIM cards and exchange. Communication was very good too, and their directions are the most accurate. The hostel is run by students who live and learn in classrooms on the premises.

I called the number on their social media to ask about booking, but it took ages to get through. When someone finally answered and heard me speak Burmese, he bluntly said he was busy and wouldn’t answer my questions. After I said how upset I was, he gave me an office number that I could never reach. I felt brushed off at every turn, with no effort to help someone who might become a guest. If this is how they treat people before a booking, I can’t imagine what staying there would be like. Absolutely disappointing.

The dorms had no facilities, the pillows were dirty, and there was hair on the bed. Toilets weren’t clean and had no toiletries, there was no coffee in the morning, and the rooftop was a mess. Only one staff member spoke English, though the staff were kind. Overall, a bad experience.
