I left feeling duped, and honestly don't know how this place is legally operating as a hostel. Everything felt thrown together, unprofessional and borderline unsafe. The Rose Hostel in St. Julian’s was by far the worst accommodation I stayed at on my trip, and I felt genuinely uncomfortable and unsafe. I wouldn't stay here. The website said breakfast was served, but there was no breakfast and no kitchen. The “kitchen” was a closet with a sink and microwave, nothing else. There were no staff on site when I arrived. Check-in happened through WhatsApp, with an envelope bearing my name and key code left on the front desk. There was no security or privacy. Since I arrived at night and nobody was there to check me in, I was forced to sign a backdated contract. It felt shady and borderline illegal. The hostel didn't feel secure. You could enter through the downstairs bar, which was just as sketchy as the rest of the place, without any security checkpoints. Dorm room doors didn't lock, only the lockers did. I booked what I thought was an all-female dorm but ended up sharing with three loud, inconsiderate guys, and felt deeply uncomfortable and unsafe. The dorm bed curtains were stained, and the whole room felt grimy and unclean. The shower curtains were disgusting, there were no bathroom hooks or counter space, and the bathroom lights were outside the bathroom, which is absurd. There was no A/C, no fans and no communal space. It didn't feel like a hostel with any community or atmosphere, just a bad, cheap hotel with bunk beds. The fourth-floor dorm overlooked the lower dorm, with no sound privacy at all. The top bunk stairs were awkward, with every other step missing, and the locker closets were so tall I couldn't reach inside properly. The stairs were under construction, dangerously narrow and poorly built. I wouldn't be surprised if someone got hurt. There was no drinking water, just a tiny trash bin, and you had to ask for Wi-Fi. The bar “Minus One,” which seems to be part of the hostel, was completely empty and had creepy vibes. Stay literally anywhere else.

The place’s location wasn’t enough to make up for the stay. I booked a hostel knowing what that meant, but the hygiene and basic conditions still fell short. The room had food, rubbish and personal items lying around, and people were noisy when I was trying to rest. There wasn’t even a phone charging socket I could find. I was put on a bunk with other guests despite plenty of empty beds. On the lower bunk, a couple shared one bed and made noise through the night. At 50 euros a night, I consider these conditions unacceptable and would like them to consider compensation. This is a shameful experiment on tourists, not what I’d call a hostel in terms of comfort or cleanliness.

The view from the room was amazing, and the staff were good. They even provided two towels, which was nice. For a backpacker, I thought the price was a great deal for what you get. It’s well placed in st julian, about 30mn from the airport, with nightclubs a 10-minute walk away and restaurants and coffee shops right outside. I just wish checkout were at 11 or 12 instead of 10, which feels too early. See you next time!

The small port view was amazing, and there’s a bus stop nearby. The location was really good, and the rooms were clean and quiet. It was the first time my friend and I, two girls, had stayed in a hostel, and we had a really nice experience. The staff were extremely helpful. Definitely worth it!

We couldn’t sleep because the room was unbearably hot and stuffy. The receptionist controlled the air conditioning, switching it on when he wanted and setting the temperature himself. He left it at 24 degrees overnight with six people in the room. There were only two sockets for all six beds, none by the beds, and the internet barely worked when you were in bed. The kitchen setup was awful too: the microwave was on one floor and the tables on another. The dining area was dirty and smelled bad, like it hadn’t been cleaned in months.
