Casa Ellul - Small Luxury Hotels of the World

The staff made a real difference during my stay. Everyone at the front desk and in housekeeping was friendly, attentive, and accommodating, and I enjoyed the visit overall. At this price, though, the details matter. The hotel advertises high-end toiletries, but the shower had refillable branded containers that seemed to hold a much cheaper product. I know the advertised brand and use it at home, so I noticed the difference. When I asked the front desk for a new, sealed package, they said all the containers had the same product inside. I understand refillable amenities, but the way these were presented felt misleading. It didn’t ruin my stay, but it did take away from the premium feel the hotel seems to be aiming for. With more care on those small touches, this could be an exceptional experience instead of just a good one.

We stayed for four days in January and I’d be happy to come back, especially in winter, to the old town of Valletta. The hotel is small, quiet, and intimate, with a great location. Front desk staff were very friendly and gave us all the information we needed. Restaurants, a theatre, ferries, and small boats to other districts are all a short walk away. An Uber or Bolt from the airport was about 13€. Our room was number 4 on the third floor. It was very dark, with two windows facing inner walls, as shown in the photos. If you want more sunlight or a brighter room, choose a top floor room or one with street-facing windows. We needed twin beds, and only two rooms have them, so there weren’t many options. The mattress was rather hard but comfortable. The room was clean, with coffee and tea, and very hot water in the bathroom, so watch out for the radiator. Sometimes I could hear toilets flushing from upstairs or the next building. Check-in at 2:30 pm was smooth. The hotel provides a set of three keys, including one for the wooden entrance door, or you can ring the bell for the front desk to let you in. The breakfast room felt too dark, but the selection was good, freshly made, and served individually. Breakfast was included. The restaurant was closed during our stay, and sweets were left beside the beds in the evening.

Casa Ellul was a lovely place to stay, right in the heart of Valletta. My room was stylish, and the beautiful boutique hotel has loads of character. The staff were kind and welcoming, and it was a perfect base for exploring the city. I absolutely loved it.

The breakfasts were perfect, and the hot tub overlooking Valletta’s rooftops is something we’ll remember for a lifetime. Even in the city center, the hotel felt like a peaceful haven. Peter and his team were incredibly hospitable and looked after our needs so well. All the best sights are within walking distance. This was a highlight of our holiday, and we hope to come back one day.
