Hotel Riu Plaza Guadalajara

The breakfast buffet was really good, and the location puts you within about 15 minutes of popular areas, so it could work well for a first visit to Guadalajara. The modern feel of the city would probably bring me back. Still, I’d stop short of five stars: I had to switch rooms twice, first because of plumbing trouble and then because the lights had some issue. The pool was closed for maintenance, too. One morning I bought a coffee in the lobby and paid 90 pesos, which felt ridiculous. I could understand that price at a Starbucks.

We were welcomed warmly at check-in, and the rooms were spacious, clean, and nice. But our four-day stay was spoiled by a few things. The music around the pool was deafening, and the streaming service kept adding adverts. In the small lounge, where some guests can get very nice food and drinks through the day, people were allowed to play songs and videos on their phones. We were also repeatedly refused a table at the rooftop bar. I suspect it may have been because we’re a same-sex couple.

The staff are still friendly and attentive, and I truly appreciate that. After being a loyal guest since the hotel first opened, though, it’s sad to see the property decline so much. The rooms look tired, with dated furniture and worn finishes, and they don’t match the five-star price. We also noticed odd, unpleasant smells in both the hallways and our room, something we never encountered in the earlier years. Good service can’t make up for all the problems with the property. We’ve decided to take our business to the JW Marriott from now on. It’s sad to say goodbye after so many years, but it’s time.

The location made getting to key attractions easy, and everything felt clean and well maintained. I also really liked the spacious, comfortable room, the friendly and attentive staff, and the well-kept pool. Riu Plaza in Guadalajara made for a wonderful stay, with amenities that made everything feel effortless and enjoyable.
