Hotel Real de Minas Guanajuato

The shower has a 10 cm step, it's dark, and there's no railing, which could be difficult for elderly people. You can hear your neighbor's conversations through the walls, so there's really no privacy. The rooms themselves are spacious and comfortable, the staff are friendly, and the public areas are quite fine.

The bed was comfortable, the room was spacious and quiet, and cleanliness was about a 4 out of 5. The rest of the service didn't match what you'd expect from a place calling itself a 4-star hotel. We waited half an hour at reception when we arrived. On the fourth floor, the Wi-Fi kept cutting out, so even browsing Instagram was a pain. Getting a shower took me 35 minutes, though I was actually under the water for only five: hot water arrived slowly, and the hot and cold indicators were misplaced. They left one bar of soap for two people to use for everything, with no hand soap. There was also just one bedside table for two beds, with no drawers, and its sharp stone edge hurt my hand five times in one day.

The staff made a big difference, helping with our luggage, buying event tickets, and finding us a certified guide to show us around town. Their service was far beyond what I'm used to at American hotels that cost three times as much. We were very comfortable in our standard room, and the hotel was clean.

We bought tickets at the front desk for a four-hour tour, which let us explore the city without driving or parking. The guide, Paul, was amazing, and the restaurant served great food. We enjoyed our stay in the beautiful rustic rooms with their lovely views.
