Casa Chujuk by Spirit Group

Casa Chujuk is close to the ferry and main street, but the area is very calm. The beach isn’t far, and there’s also a pool. My room and bathroom were spacious and very clean, with fresh-smelling towels and sheets and a mini fridge. David welcomed me warmly when I arrived. I had a really good night here. Thank you, David!

We ended up changing hotels on our last night, and the whole stay was one to forget. The ground-floor room was damp, dirty, and poorly ventilated. There was smoke left by previous guests, and the sheets and towels stayed wet and started to smell. When we first went in, we found a live cockroach in the bathroom shower. We told the staff right away, but instead of cleaning the room or offering another solution, they just gave us insect spray so we could deal with it ourselves. Staff were unhelpful and paid little attention to what we asked for.

This was my second trip, and it’s the best hotel in Holbox for me. The location is convenient, with a quiet setting and an easy walk to the center. Rooms are spacious and nicely decorated, and I’d ask for an upstairs one. David deserves a special mention for being friendly and proactive during our stay.

The place looks nice and fairly new, and the owner was pleasant. Our room had a fridge and a sitting area with a table. The location between the ferry and center worked well, especially since golf cart taxis can have long queues if you stay farther from the ferry. Wi-Fi was reasonable. The small pool was nice, with several chairs and tables but only one sunbed. There are beach club arrangements if you want a day at the beach. The hot shower was pleasant, though you need to switch on the boiler 15 minutes ahead. Good value, and the booking was charged neatly to my card around arrival, so no cash was needed. The roads on Isla Holbox are muddy all year, apparently with no plans to change that, so leave high heels and white sneakers at home. We struggled to cool the room down; the AC and ceiling fan were running, but it stayed a bit too warm at night. Having been to Holbox at least 15 times, I wondered if a mosquito net over the bed might help. We got no reply to questions sent through booking beforehand, and it turned out messages went through an agency or something. Reception doesn’t open until 09:00. Poolside drinks and snacks would be a nice addition, though there are mini-supermarkets nearby.
