The tortilla workshop was a letdown. The four of us paid over 2,100 pesos, but the tortillas came out dry and we were still hungry. It felt overpriced, especially since we’ve done similar workshops elsewhere and know what that price should get. The accommodation was great, and the Mayan architecture talk, with its interactive activities, was really engaging.

A great place to stay in Izamal if you want to experience and learn about traditional culture. I’d recommend it to anyone!

The children had a great time exploring the property, learning about the sustainability projects, borrowing games, and swimming. La Casa Maya had lots of room and beds, plus a hammock for them. My husband and I stayed in the Tres Culturas room. Mel chose every detail in both rooms with such good taste; they’re beautifully put together. We enjoyed breakfast in the garden each morning, and the handmade bathroom soaps were so nice that we took them home as keepsakes. We also found high-quality local honey in the little shop by the entrance. The dry toilet is worth trying, and my husband especially liked the solar shower, which stayed hot during the day and for part of the evening. We were a family of five, two adults and three children, staying for two nights in a Mayan-style home near Mérida. Owner Mel, her family, and the staff made us feel very welcome. For an extra cost, they arranged tortilla and salsa making, as well as a lovely nighttime fire with marshmallows and Mayan stories for the kids. Those activities made the stay memorable, and we learned a lot about Mayan culture and the nature around us. It was an enriching, unusual experience for our family, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a thoughtful, authentic stay.

Breakfast was generous and nourishing, and the service was outstanding. The little souvenir shop is thoughtfully stocked and fairly priced. What a magical place in Izamal, celebrating and helping bring Mayan culture back through a beautiful sustainability project. Thank you, M, for the experience.

I was inspired by how committed the owners are to sustainability, building authentic casa maya homes, and keeping ancient traditions alive. They’re fantastic.
