Hotel Zar La Paz

Hotel Zar keeps things simple, but makes that simplicity feel comfortable and welcoming. The place is in very good repair, well kept, and exceptionally clean and neat. Staff are super friendly and helpful, the location is convenient, and the rates are reasonable. This is our go-to place to stay in La Paz.

For a budget stay, Hotel Zar La Paz worked well. It’s on a busy main road, opposite a shopping plaza with a Soriana Supermarket, and plenty of fast food and sit-down restaurants are within walking distance. Getting to the downtown waterfront takes about 10 minutes by taxi or DiDi, or 20 minutes on foot. I’d booked a standard king for two nights in mid-March 2025, but a change in plans meant I checked out early and stayed just one night. It’s a casual hotel.

After hours of travel, all we wanted was a shower and a good night’s sleep. There was no hot water, and the shower door had a hole that let water slowly flood the floor. The room had no hand towels or bathroom floor mat. We changed rooms, but the shower and bathroom flooded the same way there. The woman at the front desk was kind and did her best, but the hotel itself gets zero stars from me. I definitely wouldn’t stay again or recommend it.

For anyone from the US, here’s a tip: if you get to the room and there’s no electricity, put your spare key card into the slot near the door to switch on the power. The rooms are clean and standard, and there’s a large, secure parking lot. We paid $45 US on a Friday night, which I can’t complain about, especially given the location and how new the hotel is. It was surprisingly cheaper than I expected.
