Cocolia Hotel

We meant to explore more of the town center, but during our three days we mostly stayed in and enjoyed the peace and beauty of the hotel. The drive up and down the hill isn’t easy, and getting around the large grounds can feel like hiking, with basic paths and lots of stone steps. Cocolia makes a real effort to respect and include the local nature and traditions. You can see animals, insects and people all seeming comfortable in the setting. The bungalows are beautiful and unlike anywhere else. Staff were very kind and attentive, and listened to the small bits of feedback we gave.

The large pool was a highlight for me. We spent hours relaxing there, and the beach is a 10-minute walk away, with a stretch of sand that feels like your own. The hotel has beautiful views and welcoming staff, with a peaceful mix of nature and luxury. This was one of the most special hotels I’ve stayed at. If you want resort-level service and comfort in an eco-minded, ethical place, it could be a great fit. The open-air bungalows and paths are built into the forest, where nature flourishes. You may spot iguanas, beautiful birds or spiders. There are mosquito nets, though with open-air rooms, nature can still make its way inside at night. The uneven paths and stairs would be difficult for someone with physical disabilities.

Ordering through WhatsApp was easy, although the road there is a bit rough. The food was good, especially the delicious fish, but portions were on the small side. In the afternoon the pool can get a bit messy with leaves, and it looks better in photos than in person. The room was lovely and unusual, and the place feels special, right in the middle of nature. Since everything is open, you’re surrounded by nature, including some insects, but they provide a mosquito net. A distinctive stay for people who enjoy being close to nature.

We spent our honeymoon at Cocolia, and it was amazing. The place is beautiful and secluded, just right for a break. Our bungalow was lovely, and I’m glad we chose one with an ocean view. The staff were kind and helpful without hovering. It’s a short walk to the nearest beach, or an easy cab ride to zipolite or San agustinillo. If you’re looking for somewhere off the beaten path with good service and amenities, this is a special place. I can’t wait to come back to mazunte.
