The best part was the sleep. The beds and pillows were very soft, and I rested well. The hotel is centrally located, too, and two reception staff members, a young woman with round glasses and an older man with light blue eyes, were warm and helpful. That’s about all I can praise. At check-in, the man at the desk didn’t explain how to find the room and mumbled the number. We thought he said 104 when it was 4, and the key’s sticker was mostly peeled off. We had to go back to ask for the room number, directions, and the WiFi password. We’d also booked an airport taxi through booking.com for the next morning for an extra 200 pesos. He didn’t mention it or ask what time we needed it, so we ended up getting an Uber. Maybe nobody had told him about the booking, but then why offer the service? The room had a constant damp smell, though I couldn’t see water damage. The AC worked but only went down to 21 degrees. That was fine for us, but keep it in mind if you like a colder room. There were a lot of smaller problems, too: the bathroom smelled like feces and black water; the sink leaked around the faucet; the floor hadn’t been swept; and the dresser drawers had dust and cobwebs. Two floor tiles were loose enough to come up, which seems worth knowing if you have small children. Only two of five outlets worked, and one was badly painted over. There was what looked like a punched hole in the bathroom door, and the toilet seat took two hands to pry apart, which felt frustrating and unsanitary. The TV needed to be switched on manually and was so high up that anyone shorter than about 5'5" would have trouble. The sheets had unexplained black or gray stains. The room echoed, and being near the lobby meant we heard everything. The atmosphere just felt awful to me, like someone had died there. For 700 pesos for two people for one night, the price was ridiculous given all that. There’s a no-refunds sign at reception, and I can see why they’d need one. We won’t come back, and I’d steer others away too. Even on a budget, you can find somewhere better at that price.

It’s a lovely old hotel, with a nice courtyard and pool, a quaint dining room, and friendly staff. Our booking included continental breakfast, though they first said it didn’t. I showed them the confirmation and they honored it. The two rooms we had were large, and the bed linen and towels were clean and changed daily. The main issues were the windows, which weren’t clean, thick dust on the backs of the doors, and dead flies caught in cobwebs near the ceiling. The resident cat also made a racket most nights. Room 232 had a sink pipe that leaked quite a lot onto the floor. The rooms themselves were clean, but could use a proper once-over. I’d stay again and hope they sort out those little things and restore some sparkle to this beautiful place.

For what I paid, my room was really big, and the location is right in the center. The staff were friendly and helpful, too. I’d definitely stay here again if I come back to Merida.

Awful hotel. It was old, dirty, mouldy, and felt unsafe to me. Water dripped from the ceilings on the upper floors, and the receptionist was unkind. Steer clear.

Once the room issue was sorted, everything was great, and everyone besides the woman at check-in was friendly and nice. She wouldn’t look at my reservation, only my ID, and made no effort to explain what she meant. She ignored me and made things difficult until a male clerk stepped in and got it resolved quickly. She’d put us in a tiny, broken room, which I immediately refused. Eventually we got the room I’d paid for.
