Hotel Boutique Casa Flor De Mayo

The location was good, and the receptionist was kind and apologetic. Still, after this experience, we wouldn't stay here again. We booked a Deluxe Double Room at Hotel Boutique Flor de Mayo in Mérida for December 22-27, based on great reviews, but left after the first night because of several problems. During the night we found two cockroaches, one large and one smaller, and the bedding had visible stains. The toilet only flushed properly if we lifted the cistern lid and adjusted the mechanism each time. The room was noisy and lacked privacy because its windows faced an outdoor path. Lights on that path stayed on all night, making the room bright even with the blinds down. There was no one at reception overnight, so we reported everything the following morning. The staff member was understanding but didn't seem to know what to do, and no other room was offered. At checkout, we were told we'd get a full refund for the four unused nights. Later, by email, the hotel said it would refund only two nights and falsely claimed it had offered us another room, which we had turned down. Around three weeks later, the refund was still unresolved, and we hadn't been reimbursed for those four nights. I might have rated the place higher if they had refunded us as promised, but the cockroaches and dishonesty make this a one-star stay.

The photos don't do Casa Flor de Mayo justice. There are garden corners, several outdoor spots, and a lovely, well-kept pool and garden, perfect for relaxing. Inside, the common areas include a well-stocked kitchen, a cozy living room with TV and couches, and a nice dining area where charming people serve clean, wholesome breakfasts. Matt and his capable, kind colleagues made us feel at home in a comfortable, charming atmosphere. I've stayed at plenty of hotels around this part of Mérida, from fancy to basic, and this is my favorite by far. My hotel needs are simple: clean rooms that don't feel creepy, hot showers, comfortable beds, and a well-lit area for walking at night. Mérida feels incredibly safe after dark, though its sidewalks can be tricky if you're prone to turning an ankle. Those basics can be surprisingly hard to find, and they got them right here. Two thumbs and two big toes up!

We only had one night and didn't get much time to explore Merida, so we wished we could have stayed longer. The hotel gave us plenty of help, with suggestions for restaurants and bars and a bit of local history. They also sorted out our early departure and prepared breakfast to go. It's a cozy place with beautiful rooms and good AC, and the service was very helpful.

The owner and staff were generous with recommendations. Edgar set us up with a wonderful driver, Rafael, who took us on a day trip to Uxmal, the Chocolate Museum, a local restaurant, and a couple of cenotes. Breakfast at Flor de Mayo was delicious, with fruit, eggs, bread, and a sweet treat. The hotel's two-block distance from the paseo makes it a great spot to pick up a bicycle for a Sunday ride. There's also a pretty little garden and pool for cooling down on a hot Merida afternoon. The central plaza takes a bit more walking, but it's doable if you enjoy a stroll.
