Hotel Stella Maris

The room got uncomfortably hot overnight because the AC seemed broken, and noise was constant. With such thin walls and no soundproofing in the windows, we heard motorcycles racing all night. The central location is the one real plus. The bathroom feels very dated, and the staircase looks like it belongs in a horror movie. Staff speak very limited English, so communication could be difficult for anyone who doesn’t speak Spanish. I left very disappointed; the rest of the place needs major improvement.

Getting around the city was easy from this location, and the price was very good. Check-in was quick, the staff were friendly and accommodating, and both the room and bathroom were very clean. I’d stay again. The WiFi could use some work, but everything else was great.

I loved the privacy option most: they give you a door hanger you can flip between “do not disturb” and “I want my room cleaned,” so you can keep housekeeping out if you prefer. I honestly can’t think of any downsides. My partner and I had a great first visit to Mexico City, and I was treated really well from my first phone call onward. I’d worried they might judge me by how I look, but that didn’t happen. The staff were all friendly. It was quiet and clean, with good Wi-Fi on the fourth floor, an elevator, and a restaurant in the hotel. Our room had a bathtub. There’s also a small, simple pool on the ninth floor. The setting felt safe inside and around the hotel. A 7-Eleven and breakfast places are nearby, along with a decent sized park across the street with a dog park and skating area. The smallest room with one bed cost 1,100 pesos. The hotel is in a great CDMX location.

The room looked nice and the bed was comfortable, but the practical details were frustrating. Most of the outlets had been removed, leaving just two in the bathroom and one by the TV. With three people sharing the room, we bought a surge protector, and the outlet near the TV kept shocking us. The bathroom wasn’t cleaned properly, and the shower head sprayed water everywhere and needed replacing. The AC barely worked, so I kept waking up hot. Reception staff rolled their eyes when we asked for simple things, like our car keys, which have to be left with them when you park there. On our last day we tried the pool, but staff got annoyed when we asked about turning on the jets in the unheated side pool. Roof construction workers were there the whole time and were more pleasant than the hotel staff. I was really unhappy with the service.
