El Callejón Hotel Boutique

The staff were charming and attentive across housekeeping, the restaurant, and the bar, and I especially want to thank Romina for all the little extras that made this a special vacation. They remembered that two of us had birthdays and provided food, coffee, and tea for our early trip to the airport at the end of our stay. The included breakfast was convenient and very good, even for our picky children. Our two-bedroom family suite was huge and beautifully designed, and the courtyard was gorgeous. The whole place felt like a nearly private compound, and we were treated like celebrities. The location was lovely and felt safe and secure the whole time. Restaurants and cafes are nearby, with a short, pleasant walk to the busier, noisier parts of the city. Truly the best hotel stay I’ve ever had.

We really enjoyed our 5 night stay at El Callejón Hotel Boutique. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the main centre, and the rooms are gorgeous, with personal touches like welcome cards from the housekeeper and hotel staff and chocolates that made them feel special and luxurious. The included breakfast was delicious every morning, and José made the best margarita cocktails at the hotel bar. Romina and Roxana, the lovely ladies at evening reception, helped with Oaxaca recommendations and taxi bookings. Thanks also to Victaliano and Jackmar for arranging our room change and being so kind and attentive. Highly recommended for a Oaxaca stay.

We had a great time in Oaxaca with our family and friends, but it wasn’t thanks to El Callejon Hotel. This year the stay was just average, and we’d invited our group because our visit last year had been phenomenal. A lot of the little details were missing this time. Last year we got copitas de mezcal and mezcal granita or nieve on arrival. This time there was nothing special, not even a map or an introduction to nearby attractions. I raised the concern and was told they’d make it right, but that it was because the chef had an emergency. I understood that emergencies happen. Still, over our 5 nights, nothing was done, not even a map. We also weren’t given bottled water in the room each day like last year, and had to ask the desk staff daily. They didn’t help us to the door or make sure we had a taxi either, though they weren’t busy and were just sitting at the desk.

The courtyard is wonderfully calm, though you can walk straight into Oaxaca’s lively city streets from here. The rooms are comfortable and beautifully put together, with modern design that still feels tied to the local style. Everyone on staff was warm and attentive, which made the stay memorable. A lovely base for exploring Oaxaca.
