We appreciated how secure Pug Seal felt. You need to be buzzed in, unlike many Oaxaca properties where anyone can walk straight inside. Everything is within walking distance, too. Our room was spacious and on the quieter side of the hotel. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was large, and the shower had strong pressure. The air conditioning worked well. They also provide plenty of little extras, from cotton buds and bathroom essentials to free coffee, tea, fresh fruit, and snacks. In shared areas, there’s an honor system for drinks and snacks, just write down your room number. There are several communal workspaces, and people who aren’t staying there seem to come by for breakfast or to work, giving the place a relaxed, lively feel. Staff were available around the clock and service was very good. We didn’t eat there, so can’t speak to the food, but it was a comfortable, convenient stay.

The property itself is beautiful, which is why I really wanted to like Pug Seal Oaxaca, but we were extremely disappointed. Several clubs surround the hotel, and their bass came through the rooms all night. Even earplugs didn’t make it possible to sleep. One room was apparently closed because of excessive noise issues on the hotel’s side, which says a lot about the problem. Three other guests and we left after one night because we couldn’t bear the noise. The location may suit some people, but with so little soundproofing, I can’t recommend it to anyone who wants to rest.

The hotel is stunning and the breakfasts are superb. But noise from a nearby bar kept us awake until 3.45 am.

The room was spacious and well equipped, though having no window made it feel a bit closed in. That seems to be the hotel’s overall design, so keep it in mind when booking. Even so, I’d happily return to Pug Seal. The terrace was my favorite place, overlooking a relaxing water installation. Breakfast in the common area was delicious and full of local flavors, and the staff were exceptionally kind and helpful. The location is excellent, a short walk from the Zócalo and Santo Domingo church.

Pug Seal was an amazing experience. The whole team were helpful and accommodating, and our room was spacious enough with all the essentials. The reception coffee was great, and the breakfast area is charming. There’s interesting art all through the hotel.
