Hotel Sofia

The location was the one good thing about our stay, and the only reason I'm giving two stars instead of one. Everything else was disappointing. Our room was humid, the sheets didn't look clean, and one pillowcase had a drop of blood on it. It had no windows or air conditioning, and its door opened straight onto the internal patio, where guests kept walking by and reception staff spoke loudly late at night. Rest was difficult. The breakfast called "continental" was three dry rusks like zwieback, one small packet each of butter and jam for two people, papaya, and black coffee. Nobody offered water or asked if we wanted tea instead. We went elsewhere for breakfast. The shower had no hot water. Reception said to leave it running for 15-20 minutes, which seemed incredibly wasteful, but it never warmed up and I had to take a cold shower. Water also barely drained from the shower and sink, so it collected. Around 2 AM someone knocked and tried to open our door, then came back about 10 minutes later and tried again. It was disturbing and made us feel very uncomfortable. The hotel seems poorly maintained and managed. Apart from the location, I wouldn't recommend it.

I called before booking to ask whether early check-in was available. The receptionist said yes, but after I booked, he denied it. Worse, he suggested I rent an extra day to guarantee my room. That was rude and unprofessional. This happened today, May 12, 2026, at 10:15 am.

We really liked our room at Hotel Sofia. It was a good size, with a table and chair, somewhere to put luggage, and a hutch with a place to hang clothes plus several drawers. The bed was comfortable, the flat screen TV was nice, and the bathroom was large. The woman who cleaned our room was delightful and did a great job. I had two complaints. To get the air conditioner remote, I had to leave my ID at the front desk. They handed over both TV remotes without asking for that. On the roof terrace, two of the three women working there brought us a menu, then left us to get up and order food or drinks at the bar. They didn't check whether we wanted anything else. One was on her phone the whole time, and the other kept her earphones in and listened to music, mainly at night. The third woman, who worked mornings, did a nice job.

Important update to my earlier post: this hotel has bedbugs. Stay away unless you want to bring these nasty bugs home and wake up covered in bites. The place was clean and seemed recently renovated, and it was well located. Parking was two streets away. But my room couldn't pick up any of the hotel's WiFi networks, so I had to leave it whenever I wanted to get online. The beds had plastic protectors that made a lot of noise when you moved and weren't very comfortable. It was incredibly noisy in my street-facing room, with sound coming from inside the hotel too. None of the TV remotes seemed to work.
