I went to Isla Cuale several times with friends in January and February 2026. It’s a peaceful, green island in the Cuale River, nice for an easy stroll and a quiet break from the busier parts of Puerto Vallarta. The artisan market has plenty of crafts and souvenirs, though both quality and prices vary from seller to seller. There are a few cafés too, which suit the relaxed atmosphere.

I love the cat sanctuary. A few times during my trip, I brought food, water, and toys.

The island was a peaceful, quiet park, though I didn’t spot any cats. I did see some large trees with iguanas sunning themselves, including this good-sized one. Like the cats, the iguanas are protected. A sign credits the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Garden for contributing the garden plants, and there was a chance to shop too. On our walking tour, we went to the Cuale River and its island, also called the Island of Cats or Cat Island. Isla Cuale sits near the mouth of the Cuale River in Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town, in the quiet southern part of downtown near the Malecon. Our guide called it an “enchanting island oasis.” The warm weather and absence of predators have led to a large population of gentle feral cats resting in the gardens and around the shops and restaurants. There’s a cultural center, craft market, and street art. You can walk south along the Malecon to the bridge over the Rio Cuale and take the stairs down, or use one of the two hanging bridges, La Iguana Bridge and Puente Rio Cuale. It’s also known as Isla Rio Cuale, Isla del Rio Cuale, Cuale River Island, and The Island of Cats.

This little island is a lovely place to wander, shop, and take in the scenery. The paved path is easy to walk, there are benches under the shade of big tropical trees, and public restrooms. The colorful shops sell all kinds of Mexican handicrafts, much of it made by local artisans, and there are several restaurants and places to get a cold drink. Quality ranges from low to beautifully crafted high-end goods, so bargaining is recommended. It’s a real treat for the eyes. Isla Cuale is a small, lush island in the Cuale River, near where it empties into Banderas Bay. From the cruise terminal, it’s about a ten to twelve minute cab ride, with a chance to see parts of downtown Puerto Vallarta and ride over the bumpy cobblestone roads. It’s a quiet, relaxing spot and well worth a visit. While you’re there, stroll along the Malecón for bay views and the many statues. Don’t miss it.

A lovely park and cat sanctuary.
