I’d probably stay here again. It feels quiet and cozy, and has a leafy garden at the back plus a rooftop with seating. The decor is full of artwork, with a rustic, homey feel and a bit of a “new age” vibe. It’s a short walk from the centre and stays quiet at night. There are some small inconveniences. The bunks don’t have ladders, so getting up and down takes some figuring out. None of the frying pans had handles, which made cooking awkward. The kitchen has eight stovetop burners, which is great, but no electric kettle or microwave. It gets cold in the evening and overnight, and there are no heaters in the rooms, though that’s common in Mexican hostels. Only one shower had hot water all day and night; another had it from 8am to 12pm. It didn’t cause a problem during my stay: I never had to wait, and only once did I find someone waiting for me. I could see it becoming an issue in high season.

Loved it here! It’s green, cozy, affordable, and has a relaxed feel right in the center. My favourite place to crash in San Cristobal.

This is my second trip to Mexico, and I’ve stayed here both times. It really feels like a dream to stay here. I’d only tell friends about it if they’re friendly and hospitable. Please keep rude travelers away from this place.

The conversations with some interesting people were a bright spot, but the rest of my stay left me with a bad feeling. Another guest robbed me. At first the management tried to help and offered me a free night, which I appreciated. Two nights after the theft, while I was asleep, that guest tried again to get into my locked locker. I woke to the noise and saw them quickly leave the room, which seemed very suspicious to me. When I confronted the guest the next day, they denied it. Management didn’t want to take any action, though I was allowed to change rooms. I later learned of an offer where staying seven nights earned a free night. I’d stayed seven nights, but when I asked management about the promised night, they more or less laughed at me. That experience prompted this review. In all my years staying in hostels, I haven’t had a situation this unpleasant. Please be careful. Safe travels to everyone.

I planned to stay three days and wound up spending a week here because El Nagual feels like a home, not a hostel. Rodrigo and all the volunteers are so kind and do their best to make you comfortable. The shared spaces are great, the beds are comfortable, and the kitchen is well equipped, though a few items could use replacing. The people are lovely, and good energy seems to draw more good energy. Una Buena onda! Thanks, everyone, see you later! 🌈
