We were at Meliá Cozumel for 2 nights/3 days and left very disappointed for a chain with this reputation. There are two tiers, basic, which is what I booked, and “Level.” We weren’t offered the upgrade or given a way to choose it, so the setup felt far from transparent. The basic all-inclusive package didn’t go far. Drinks came only in plastic bottles, while Bacardi rum, a supermarket staple at $10/1.5L, was reserved for Level guests. Sunbeds were hard to find. Staff told us to wait for one to open up, but we never got one. Breakfast and lunch were the same for everyone, basic, with few choices and no local flavors. Dinner was worse. The buffet was mediocre, and the a la carte restaurants needed advance bookings. We were told they were “fully booked” when we arrived and couldn’t get a spot during our stay, despite what we paid. They fit us in at the taco place once, but it was average and nearby eateries were better. The concierge was on his phone and ignored the line of guests in front of him. I asked about the “free romantic dinner” poster beside him, and he barely looked up before saying, “Scan the QR code yourself if there’s one.” For each follow-up he sent me to the hotel website. He showed no initiative or helpfulness. What kind of training is that for a frontline role? We brought our own drinks because the plastic bottles didn’t cut it, and ate out for 4 meals. For the price, it felt like we were being nickel-and-dimed at an “all-inclusive.” I luckily recorded the concierge guy’s answer and posted the video on TikTok.

Check-in went smoothly, the beach was clean, and our room was clean too, though dated and with very thin walls. We were there for a friend’s birthday, and maintenance quickly fixed a leaking faucet, which we appreciated. The food and drinks were a real letdown. Buffet food was bland and badly temperature-controlled, with cold items warm and hot ones not hot. It was hard to navigate with gluten or dairy allergies. Even after several reminders, staff kept offering dairy items to someone with a dairy allergy. Fish House was disappointing too: slow service, undercooked food, and disorganized seating despite having a reservation. We ate tacos most of the trip because that was the only consistently decent choice. Bar hygiene was concerning, with blenders reused without rinsing and few tools being washed while the dishwasher was being replaced. Drinks were sugary and low in alcohol. The property feels dated, seating is limited, especially in the Level-only areas, and it’s very family-heavy. It may suit families or people with simple food preferences, but if food quality and allergy safety matter, I’d look elsewhere.

We were a group of 12 at Meliá Cozumel from February 22-25, in a garden view room. I don’t think it delivered the all-inclusive stay that was advertised, and I wouldn’t return. The windy, cloudy weather wasn’t the resort’s fault, but outdoor restaurants and snack bars all closed, with no indoor alternatives. There were no backup plans for the closed amenities. For dining, we were left with the buffet, which was very basic but edible. Of the two open à la carte restaurants, the only booking times for our group were 5:00 PM or 9:00 PM. Neither worked for us, and there was no flexibility or effort to fit a large party. The garden view room was small with only two queen beds, and it hadn’t been cleaned properly when we arrived. There was hair in the tub/shower. Despite advertising several bars and a dance club, only the lobby bar was operating, with very little indoor seating. There was no nightlife. Evening entertainment amounted to a lackluster band, bingo night, and a jewelry sale, and there weren’t meaningful daytime activities either. The vouchers advertised as part of the all-inclusive stay were supposedly usable toward room upgrades, but when we tried, we were told nothing was available. They seemed to have little practical value. Most guests were retirees and families with small children. The children’s pool was large, which would likely appeal to families. Most staff were polite, but not especially helpful or solution-oriented. We paid for multiple restaurants, entertainment, nightlife, and options. With closures and no accommodations, the experience felt significantly reduced, without an adjustment or compensation. It might have been different in better weather, but there was too little contingency planning or available to make up for the closed facilities.

We were glad we paid for the Level upgrade and really enjoyed the trip. The rooms were spacious and clean, though they need repairs and updating. I was surprised by how disappointing the food was for a Melia. The chip wagon and most restaurants, apart from the fish one, served much the same food every day. The morning omelettes and pasta were a lifesaver, and even the desserts had no flavour.

The beach and setting are fantastic, and the property is beautiful and well maintained. Drinks were consistently great, one of the highlights of our stay. But the buffet selection was very limited at most meals, and the food was always cold. Service didn’t match the surroundings. Most staff seemed disengaged, and our concierge, Gerardo, either didn’t reply to my questions or got back to me the next day, which made planning difficult. For the price, I’d probably pick somewhere else next time for better service and dining. We visited Feb 1 - 5, 2026.
