We rented apartment 25 in this building for ten months. It was clean and renovated when we moved in, but once the rainy season began two months later, water started leaking through the ceiling and every wall. We were on the top floor, with a terrace above us. The owner, Michele, is Italian, doesn’t live in Mexico, and didn’t seem to care about the apartment. We waited another month for repairs. Two days after they were done, things got worse: the ceiling began collapsing, and we spent the next eight months with a hole overhead. Humidity led to black mold throughout the apartment and on all our belongings. We decided to leave before the lease ended because it had become a health hazard and told the owner. He sent a construction crew that tore the place apart, apparently expecting us to live in the middle of the work. We weren’t offered compensation for staying in an unlivable apartment or a safe place during repairs. When we moved out, the owner refused to speak with us and kept our deposit, so we took legal action. The apartment has since been ‘renovated,’ but only on the surface: they painted white over the black mold. The owner blamed us for his problems. The apartment is uncomfortable too, with a fixed TV that’s hard to watch, no proper lounge area, and very little storage. I strongly advise against renting or buying it. The owner is a scammer, and the place is in terrible shape from never being properly maintained.
