Villa Sanah

We spent a week here during our month-long trip, and it was a lovely way to start our time in Tulum. The place feels calm and welcoming. The mosquitoes are real, but the bed net works like a charm. Service was a little uneven, mostly because they try not to bother you. They were still helpful and happy to get anything we needed. Getting a taxi was easy: we texted the host in the lobby and they arranged one for the time we wanted. It's at the entrance to Tulum, so getting to La Veleta or the hotel zone takes a little trip. Not too far, but you'll notice it going back and forth. I loved the stay, though I don't know that I'd return. Still, it was a must-do experience.

The parking lot flooded during our first night. We had booked five nights but left early. Based on the photos and reviews, I expected a restful, private stay with my partner at Villa Sanah, but the property was in poor shape. We dragged our luggage over pea gravel to the bungalow, which didn't feel secure from outside. Light came in through gaps around the windows, doors, and walls, and wildlife and pests could get in. The thin wooden exterior doors were badly made and had loose locker-style locks, so one wouldn't close all the way (see picture). The door to the attached outdoor bathroom had only a cabinet lock, and the third door out to the courtyard had a small brass hook and loop like you'd use on a screen door. The bathroom wasn't private, and animals and rain could get in. There was also bare dirt on both sides of the shower. This was a one-star stay, nothing like what the photos and reviews suggest.

The concierge was great, but the restaurant was only okay and the silverware was dirty. The place feels a bit worn and past its heyday, and it's kind of far from everything.

The rooms are gorgeous, easily among the best I've ever stayed in. It's a lovely place if you want peace and quiet. Staff were attentive, friendly, and accommodating. It's just off the main highway, a few minutes beyond town, so you'll need a scooter or taxi. We had a lovely stay and would choose it again if we return to Tulum.
