Gem Island Resort & Spa

The sea life was the highlight for us. We saw so much while snorkeling close to shore, with clear water and beautiful sand. It’s a peaceful private resort with personal service, though the property feels run down after 20 years, so don’t expect the rooms to be in great shape. They’re planning a renovation soon. Our food portions seemed a little small at first, but after we mentioned it, they increased them, and the food was very good.

There are sharp-edged rocks here, but just off the clean beach you’ll find lots of coral and wonderfully clear water. Our room was cozy enough, and the food was nice and came on time. The kitchen followed our requested schedule and menu, and the guys were super helpful. It’s still closed now, though there’s a caretaker here.

Ahmad and Rie helped make my three-night stay thoroughly enjoyable, and the staff were friendly and very helpful. I found the view and snorkeling good. The food costs a bit more, as you’d expect at an island resort, but it tasted great and the portions were generous, so I thought it was worth the price. I was very comfortable there.

The coral and little fish were superb, and the small waves made snorkeling pleasant and easy to enjoy. The resort staff were very helpful. I also found the spa excellent and rejuvenating, with a French lady practicing Ayurveda. They have turtle conservation facilities, including a hatching area and a pond where the turtles can grow before being released into the wild. I’d definitely give the place 4+ stars.
